OGDF takes part in Google Summer of Code 2012

We are proud to announce that our graph-drawing software project OGDF has been selected as a mentoring organization at Google Summer of Code 2012. Overall, only 180 open-source organizations have been selected worldwide.

Google Summer of Code is a global program that offers students stipends to write code for open source projects. Google sponsors $5,000 for each successful student. Since its inception in 2005, the program has brought together nearly 5,500 successful student participants and over 3000 mentors from over 100 countries worldwide, all for the love of code.

Students interested in our projects should visit the OGDF GSoC page. Deadline for student applications is April 6.

IVAPP Best Paper Award

The AlgE group members Karsten Klein, Nils Kriege, and Petra Mutzel have won the Best Paper award at this year's International Conference on Information Visualization Theory and Applications (IVAPP 2012) for their publication “Scaffold Hunter - Visual Analysis of Chemical Compound Databases”. The paper describes Scaffold Hunter, an interactive software tool for the exploration and analysis of chemical compound databases. Scaffold Hunter allows to explore the chemical space spanned by a compound database, fosters intuitive recognition of complex structural and bioactivity relationships, and helps to identify interesting compound classes with a desired bioactivity. Thus, the tool supports chemists during the complex and time-consuming drug discovery process to gain additional knowledge and to focus on regions of interest, facilitating the search for promising drug candidates.

New EURO Journal on Computational Optimization

The EURO Journal on Computational Optimization is about to start. The editorial management system has already been set-up, papers can be submitted from now on. The new Journal will be run by the EURO association, and has been set up to publish original research articles in which Operations Research and Computer Science are connected. Submissions on advanced applications in computational optimization focusing on mathematical models, methodologies, or computational results are welcome. The editorial board consists of leading international scientists of the optimization community. Editor-in-Chief is Professor Dr. Martine Labbe from Universite Libre de Brussels, Professor Dr. Petra Mutzel has been appointed as editor.

ALENEX 2012 Programm steht
